Toyota today announced an off-road version of the 4Runner which will join 2017 4Runner Lineup. The off-road version will be available in two grades – TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium.

The 4Runner TRD Off-Road comes with the Multi-Terrain Select system which lets the driver to use a dial to select the mode that matches terrain and conditions, adjusting wheel slip accordingly.

In addition, the off-road version has higher ground clearance and available suspension upgrades.  The available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) facilitates extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability and stability.  For example, on loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s favor.  In extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges — uphill or down, the driver can apply “Mogul” model which minimizes wheel slip and makes the system act more like a limited slip differential.

With the addition of two new off-road versions, the 2017 4Runner lineup will include a total of 6 grades: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro.
