New Electric Lap Record for Toyota Motorsport GmbH at Nürburgring Nordschleife

Video (08m:23s): Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) Set New Electric Vehicle Lap Record at Nürburgring

On August 29 2011, Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) has set a new lap record for an electric vehicle.  The record was set at the notorious 12.9 miles Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany. The TMG’s electric vehicle (EV) that was driven by Jochen Krunbach set a new lap record of 7 minutes 47.794 sec which is well below the previous record of 9 minutes 1.338 seconds.

The Toyota Motorsport GmbH electric car was running on two electric motors which is able to achieve top speed of 162mph. Prior the run, TMG’s goal was to become the first EV to break the eight minutes mark and the goal was met comfortably.  According to Pacal Vasselon, TMG’s Technical Director, the goals for this project was to set a new EV lap record and also TMG wanted to learn more about the operation of their electric powertrain in extreme circumstances.  That was why TMG chose Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, because in motorsport there is no more extreme circuit than the Nürburgring.
