Nissan announced that its 100% electric LEAF had won the Car of the Year Japan 2011-2012 award marking the first time in the history that an electric vehicle has won this award.
Nissan LEAF the world’s first affordable, zero-emission car, designed specifically for a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis, LEAF is a medium-size hatchback that seats five adults comfortably and has a range of 100 miles on one full charge.
Nissan LEAF is powered by 48 compact lithium-ion battery modules and a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, providing a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that is in keeping with what consumers have come to expect from traditional, gasoline-powered vehicles.
Besides being the car of the year in Japan, Nissan LEAF also won the 2011 European Car of the Year and the 2011 World Car of the Year accolades.
