Nissan IDS Concept, the Autonomous Car that Learns and Drives Your Own Style

Press Release : Nissan IDS Concep – Future Autonomous Electric Vehicle

For those who are in high-performance cars, boring, repetitive are probably one of the first words that come to mind when you hear about autonomous cars or self-driving cars.  But this misconception is about to change as Nissan unveiled the IDS Concept, a car that can learn and drive your own style.

The IDS Concept is equipped with technologies that according to Nissan “will revolutionize the relationship between car and driver”.  The concept is outfitted with advanced vehicle control and safety technologies with artificial intelligence, which not only provide safe autonomous driving, but the ability to learn the driver’s driving style.

The Nissan IDS concept offers Piloted Drive and Manual Drive mode. When Piloted Drive mode is selected, the car drives itself with the driving style and performance (accelerating, braking, cornering, etc.) learned from the driver during the Manual Drive mode.

Having a hatchback body, the Nissan IDS concept however provides comfortable seating for four passengers.  It gets even more comfortable when Piloted Drive mode is selected as the steering wheel backslides, giving its space for a large flat screen.  When the Manual Drive is selected, the cabin converts back to the more conventional driving setting with the steering wheel and seats facing forward.

Nissan designed this car with the intention to give it an advanced aerodynamic performance for greater driving range.  The car’s carbon fiber body is limited to 54.33 inches in height to lessen aerodynamic drag.  Large-diameter wheels are used for high-performance but not compromising the roll resistance thanks to the use of very thin tires.

Equipped with a high-capacity 60kWh battery, Nissan says the IDS Concept or its future EVs will beat the convenience of gas-powered cars, meeting the need to drive long distances that current EVs are short of.

See Press Release for more details about the IDS Concept.
