Nissan today unveiled the mid-generational refreshed 2016 Altima and at the same time introduced a new “sport” grade Altima SR, targeting younger generation.

The changes are considerably major as Nissan is trying to gradually apply its new design language, “Energetic Flow” exterior and “Gliding Wing” interior, to its vehicles.

The refreshed 2016 Altima gets the most dramatic change on the outside with completely redesigned panels and pieces frontward of the A-pillars, including front fascia, lights, hood and fenders. The front fascia features a “V-Motion” chrome-trimmed grilles and boomerang-shape headlights which integrate halogen high beam and projector low beam lights, reminiscent of the front fascia of the Murano and Maxima.  The changes are less visible at the rear but include a new molded bumper, a new trunk lid and a lower, broader boomerang-shaped combination taillights.  The new exterior is also accompanied with a new set of newly designed 17-inch or 18-inch wheels.

The changes continue to the interior with the new “Gliding Wing” design language, seen on the Murano and the new Rogue.  It has a revised center stack, reshaped Zero Gravity front seats, and refined steering wheel. In addition, in response to customer feedback, the changes also include a revised center console that can accommodate mug handlers.

Powered by the same 2.5-liter engine that produces 182 horsepower or 3.5-liter V4 engine that generates 270 horsepower, the 2016 Altima’s coefficient drag however has been improved by 10 percent to 0.26 Cd from the previous 0.29 Cd. The improvement is due to an active grille shutter, underbody cover panels and the new front, rear fascia and windshield designs.

New to the 2016 Altima lineup is the SR sport variant, a sport grade Altima that aims at younger generation.  To keep the Altima SR affordable to younger buyers, Nissan has built the SR based on the S model instead of the higher SV or SL model.

Powered by the 2.5-L or 3.5-L engine, the 2016 Nissan Altima SR rides on 18-inch sport design wheels, and features a 12.5 percent increase in cornering performance.  It is distinguished from the other Altima models by having a trunk lid with an integrated spoiler and charcoal interior color with blue sport accents on leather-wrapped steering wheel, door panels and seats.  Paddle shifters and gear shifter are also wrapped in leather.
