Toyota’s new Sub-Compact to be Based on the Mazda2

Toyota’s new sub-compact vehicle will be based on the Mazda2, Toyota announced today.  The rebadged version of the Mazda2 will be built in Mexico at the Mazda’s factory that is currently under construction.

Toyota said that its new Mazda2 based sub-compact will only be available in North America and sold through Toyota dealerships.  The production of the new Toyota sub-compact will begin sometime in the summer of 2015.  (Note: Since the production will start in 2015, the new Toyota sub-compact will likely be built based on the next-generation Mazda2)

In the agreement with Mazda, Toyota will gain one more vehicle in its lineup and Mazda will gain in production efficiency.  Around 50,000 units annually are expected to be built.
