Mazda to Use Bioplastic for Exterior Car Parts

Mazda bioplastic technology for exterior car parts

Mazda today announced that it has developed a “bio-based engineering plastic” that can be used for exterior car parts.

Mazda already applied bioplastic for interior parts before such as some interior parts in the Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid.  The bioplatic can now be used for exterior parts since, according to Mazda, it can withstand the “harsh environment factors” and be “exceptionally weather, scratch and impact resistant”.

Also according to Mazda, the bioplastic will help Mazda reduce the environmental impact since it is made from plant-derived materials, so it “curbs petroleum use and with it C02 emissions”.  In addition, “since the bioplastic can be dyed and does not require painting, it also reduces emissions of volatile organic compounds”.

The first Mazda production model that will be equipped with interior parts made from bioplastic is the all-new fourth-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5.  The bioplastic subsequently will be used on the exterior parts of other production models.
