Edmunds spotlight: The Altima's VC-Turbo engine

The Altima offers two engines: a base 188-horsepower four-cylinder engine or an optional turbocharged engine that makes up to 248 hp. The latter, which Nissan calls the VC-Turbo, is distinctive in that it can automatically adjust the compression ratio to provide power or efficiency depending on the situation. The concept is a noble one, but the reality falls short. Maximum power requires 93 octane fuel, yet the resulting acceleration fails to impress. In addition, the VC-Turbo easily misses its EPA fuel economy rating of 29 mpg in combined driving if you regularly press harder on the accelerator.

Competitors to consider

Honda and Toyota remain two solid options. The Accord got a complete redesign in 2023 and an all-new Camry is arriving in 2025. Hyundai is giving the Sonata a dramatic makeover for 2024, and a freshening is due for the related Kia K5. All of these sedans earn higher scores from Edmunds' rankings evaluation process.

How does the Altima drive? The Altima won't win you over with stellar acceleration or braking. Our test all-wheel-drive Altima had the 2.5-liter engine, and it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in an unremarkable 8.4 seconds. The CVT automatic is well tuned, however, and helps make the Altima an almost invisible partner during day-to-day driving.

Another bright spot is the stable handling. You'll have confidence guiding the Altima through fast, sweeping curves. But this handling prowess underscores the Altima's overly light and vague steering.

Comfort

7.5/10

How comfortable is the Altima? The Altima is a calm place to sit out daily traffic. The front seats are generally comfortable, but some drivers might wish for more thigh support. Engine noises are commendably well isolated even under hard acceleration.

Less appealing is the constant stream of little impacts you'll feel when driving over rough road surfaces. The Altima's ride seems continuously busy in these instances, and larger impacts can be pretty jarring.

How’s the interior? The interior lacks style, but it more than makes up for it with straightforward usability. In particular, the climate controls and touchscreen functions are clearly labeled and easy to reach.

Though most of the Altima's sight lines are good, rear visibility is hampered by the high rear decklid. Also problematic are the low-resolution rearview camera and the distracting reflections off the dashboard and rear decklid you'll see in the windows during bright sunlight.

Technology

How’s the tech? The Altima we tested had the big 12.3-inch touchscreen. It comes with wireless connectivity for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and an onboard navigation system. Though the screen's size and responsiveness make it seem modern, it's let down by software that looks and feels outdated.

The navigation system's functionality is solid; it responded well to voice commands in our tests and easily found destinations (thanks to searches powered by Google). But the map's graphics look old and dated. Plug in your phone and use either Google or Apple Maps and those maps look super sharp, so it's not a problem with the screen itself. The backup and surround-view camera displays are also low-resolution and hard to see, especially when you're trying to use them at night.

The Altima's ProPilot Assist system, which includes lane centering and low-speed adaptive cruise control, is quite the bonus. The adaptive cruise control works very well, needing little correction in traffic.

Storage

How’s the storage? The Altima's trunk isn't the biggest in the class, but it can still accept a few full-size suitcases. Its squared-off shape also makes it easy to load to the maximum capacity. The folding rear seats are standard fare but can only be released through a pull tab in the trunk. They must be lowered by physically pulling on the seatback from the inside — they don't automatically fold when released. Front passengers have ample storage for small items. However, the cupholders are a bit shallow for taller bottles.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? We tested the all-wheel-drive Altima, which the EPA estimates gets 30 mpg combined. It posted an impressive 34 mpg on our mixed-driving real-world evaluation route. Odds are you can expect to get pretty good fuel economy from the Altima.

Value

7.0/10

Is the Altima a good value? Roomy and comfortable with the option of all-wheel drive, the Altima proves it has some distinctive value in the midsize sedan class. Warranties are middle-of-the-road, as is the roadside assistance offering. A strong showing with highway fuel economy could tip the scales for long-distance drivers as could the all-wheel drive for those who live in areas with inclement weather.

But some spots of poor build quality and a lack of attention to detail set the Altima back where it can least afford it. Gaps where the dashboard meets the windshield, and a hood design that makes it look out of alignment, stand out when it's compared to better-built competitors.

Wildcard

It's nice to see just how normal the new Altima really is. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but the experience of driving and living with the Altima is generally more than the sum of its parts. The class is fiercely competitive and it takes a pretty good car just to be midpack. The Nissan goes about tackling daily driving without much effort from the driver and provides passengers ample comfort.

Which Altima does Edmunds recommend?

We recommend checking out the SR version of the Altima. It has a sportier look that could make it easier to sell the Altima in the future. In addition, you can option the SR trim with an appealing Premium package, and Nissan reserves the Altima's available turbocharged engine for SR trim.

Nissan Altima models

The 2024 Nissan Altima is a midsize four-door sedan. It is available in S, SV, SR, SL and SR VC-Turbo trim levels. All but the SR VC-Turbo have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (188 horsepower, 180 lb-ft of torque), a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. This engine is available with all-wheel drive, but output drops to 182 hp and 178 lb-ft. The SR VC-Turbo has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (236 hp and 267 lb-ft, or 248 hp and 273 lb-ft on 93 octane gas) and comes only with front-wheel drive. The S base trim is pretty basic, but it offers:

Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)

I have the Altima SV, quietest and smoothest drive I’ve experienced with great pickup. The sound quality is excellent. Would recommend apple car play over the more finicky android car play.

The Honda Accord costs more than the Nissan Altima, especially when you compare the two in their sporty trim levels. But we think the Honda's price premium is worth paying. Simply put, the latest Accord is superior to the Altima in nearly every way. Unfortunately, you can't get all-wheel drive with the Honda. But you can get a terrific hybrid powertrain offering good acceleration and impressive fuel economy, and it comes standard in most versions of the Accord.

Our favorite midsize sedan is the Kia K5. In addition to its sleek exterior and stylish interior, the K5 is roomy, comfortable and loaded with impressive technology. Plus, it is priced slightly lower than the Altima and includes a terrific warranty package. Turbocharging is standard, too, so the Kia feels a little more responsive than the Nissan. As with the Altima, you can also get all-wheel drive on a K5. And if you love to drive, the K5 GT makes a bunch more power than the Altima SR VC-Turbo.

Nissan Altima vs. Toyota Camry

Though the Camry hasn't received a complete redesign since 2018, it remains the better midsize sedan when compared to the newer Altima. Aside from its smaller trunk and still polarizing design, the Camry comes in a wider variety of configurations, including both a hybrid powertrain and the segment's last V6 engine option. You can even get the Camry in a sport-tuned TRD trim. It's been a long time since the Altima offered something similar.
