Mitsubishi Released Details for Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid)

Press Release : Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV

Mitsubishi released details of the new Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.  Anticipated to launch in the U.S as 2014 model year, Mitsubishi aims to make the Outlander PHEV to become a B-segment global car.

Built on the new generation Outlander, the PHEV weighs approximately 3990 lbs and has dimensions of 183.3 inch long, 70.9 inch wide and 66.1 inch high.  The car is driven by a powertrain including front and rear electric motors complimented by front-mounted 2.0 liter petrol engine which has a fuel consumption of over 143 mpg (61 km/l).

There are three drive modes – Pure EV, Series Hybrid and Parallel Hybrid.  In Pure EV, two electric motors drive the car with the supplied energy from the battery.  In Series Hybrid, electric motors and generator work together in which electric motors draw power from battery and generator when needed.  In Parallel Hybrid mode, the front-mounted petrol engine and the electric motors support each other, where the petrol engine drives the front wheel via a gear train and electric motors individually drives its own axle.

Energy is drawn from the 12kWh battery pack located underfloor, which can be fully charged in 4 hours from 240V-15A outlet or a quick 80% charge for less than 30 minutes.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a top speed of over 75 mph (120 km/h) and a traveling distance of over 547 miles (880 km).  When operated in pure electric mode, the car has a driving range of over 34 miles (55km).  With all its abilities, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV still manages to have a minimal environmental impact with the CO2 emissions of just under 49 g/km.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be available first in Japan early 2013 and then Europe, North America and other markets.

See “Press Release” for more details and preliminary specifications.
