The 2011 version of one of the world’s greatest ultra-high-performance sports sedans – the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution – now boasts an expanded standard equipment package on top of its exhilarating otherworldly handling capabilities and lightning-quick turbocharged acceleration.
The Evo’s exhaust system has been revised for an improved, more sporty sounding exhaust note. Vehicles equipped with the available 40GB touch-screen HDD-based navigation system now benefit from real-time traffic information to help drivers avoid congested roadways. A USB auxiliary input port has been added. But perhaps the most exciting addition of all is the inclusion of Mitsubishi’s excellent FUSE HandsFree Link System™ that allows hands-free calls on your Bluetooth®-enabled cell phone, play your favorite songs by genre, artist, album or playlist on your iPod ®, access a USB drive by simple voice commands.
At the heart of every Lancer Evolution is a potent 291 horsepower 2.0-liter DOHC turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder engine. Dubbed the 4B11 T/C, this rev-happy (redline is at a lofty 7,000 rpm) powerplant is based on a reinforced cast-aluminum cylinder block and head and features MIVEC variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust camshafts for maximum power production. This engine’s stainless steel exhaust manifold has been positioned toward the back of the engine next to the firewall in an effort to improve the vehicle’s overall weight balance.
Knowing that power is nothing without control, Mitsubishi engineers have endowed the Lancer Evolution with an incredible level of road-hugging grip for exceptional agility, thanks to advanced active electronic driver aids including Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC), 4-wheel-drive Active Center Differential (ACD) and an Active Yaw Control (AYC) rear differential, a helical gear-type limited-slipped front differential, Active Stability Control (ASC) and Sport ABS brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), along with tarmac-grabbing Yokohama ADVAN asymmetrical performance tires.
In addition to these advanced driving dynamic controls, other safety features included on all Lancer Evolutions are a dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags, and a driver’s knee air bag.
The 2011 Lancer Evolution MR takes performance to another level over the GSR model with the addition of Mitsubishi’s remarkably advanced, ultra-quick-shifting 6-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) that allows the driver to toggle rapidly through the gears via magnesium-alloy steering wheel paddle shifters. Other athletic enhancements include an upgraded suspension featuring Bilstein® shock absorbers and Eibach® springs, 2-piece Brembo® front brake rotors, new lip spoiler, BBS® forged alloy wheels and xenon HID headlamps.
A new color – Octane Blue – is now available exclusively for the Evo MR for 2011, joining Rally Red, Phantom Black Pearl, Graphite Grey Pearl, Wicked White and Apex Silver Metallic.
