Toyota announced it will carry out two voluntary recalls involving certain 2004 to 2009 model year Prius vehicles.
The first recall involves about 670,000 Prius vehicles, which Toyota needs to check the steering “intermediate extension shaft” and replace it if necessary. The extension shaft with inadequate hardness treatment may produce internal clearance causing the splines to wear out over time.
The second recall involves around 350,000 of the same Prius vehicles, which Toyota needs to replace the “electric water pump” for the hybrid system. A faulty “electric water pump” may cause illumination of different warning lights in the instrumental panel. In some rare instances, the hybrid system may stop while the vehicle is in operation.
Affected Prius owners will receive a notification letter in early December 2012.
